Before pursuing my master's degree in human-computer interaction, I served as a program manager at the Safety Net Institute (SNI), the organization representing California's entire network of public hospital systems.

My role focused on designing and implementing statewide programs to help these vital institutions deliver more equitable, efficient, and patient-centered care for all people, regardless of their ability to pay.

Problem

How might we equip public healthcare systems to deliver more equitable, efficient, and patient-centered care?

Solution

I designed and implemented statewide programs that accelerated cross-system learning and drove delivery system transformation.

Data-Driven Decision Making

I analyzed healthcare quality metrics and performance data to identify trends (and anomalies) to investigate.

Data-Driven Decision Making

I analyzed healthcare quality metrics and performance data to identify trends (and anomalies) to investigate.

Ground-Level Insights

Data was a good starting point, but I turned to speaking with frontline providers to understand real challenges and humanize the quantitative findings.

Insight: Crisis-Proof Design

When COVID-19 transformed healthcare overnight, these established research practices proved invaluable. The pandemic reinforced a core design principle: good communication with users and rapid adaptability are essential when designing for crises.

COVID-19 Vaccines: Equitable Access Playbook

March - June 2021

Problem

Amid fear and misinformation, public hospitals faced the urgent challenge of building trust and increasing vaccinations in marginalized communities.

Solution

A report of 28 case studies that public hospitals used to improve vaccine access during the Spring 2021 rollout.

Read the report ↗

How I Did It

I conducted interviews with 35 vaccine leaders across the state, synthesized insights into actionable strategies, and designed a clear, accessible report that hospitals could immediately use.

Post-Pandemic Hospital Rebuilding: Operational Frameworks for Resilience

May - November 2022

Problem

As California’s public hospitals emerged from the height of the COVID-19 crisis, they had to rebuild their systems in a fundamentally altered landscape.

Solution

A successful workshop for 60+ healthcare leaders to develop frameworks for rebuilding core aspects of ambulatory care, including care teams, scheduling systems, and empanelment.

How I Did It

I surveyed hospital systems, interviewed frontline providers, and pushed participants to think boldly about what a more resilient, equitable future of care could look like.

Data Systems Modernization: A Collaborative Strategy for Interoperability

2020-2023

Problem

Hospitals needed to meet federal interoperability requirements but were slowed by fragmented systems and disconnected leadership.

Solution

Built statewide working groups that bridged technical and executive teams across institutions, establishing lasting channels for shared problem-solving.

How I Did It

I brought together technical staff and C-suite leaders from multiple institutions, facilitated ongoing collaboration, and helped shape shared advocacy strategies and implementation plans.

Digital Presence Redesign: Repositioning SNI

January - December 2022

Problem

SNI’s digital experience lacked clarity and accessibility, undermining its role as a statewide healthcare leader.

Solution

Co-led a full digital refresh, aligning brand and UX to better support users in navigating complex healthcare resources.

How I Did It

I collaborated with the Communications Director to shape the strategic vision, worked closely with web designers to refine the site’s UX, and guided implementation to align the final product with both user needs and organizational goals.

My work in healthcare systems transformation revealed critical insights that drive my overall approach to design:

Design for equity requires intentionality.

Early in the vaccination effort, I witnessed how an online registration system was compromised when access codes meant for vulnerable communities were leaked on Twitter. This mishap highlighted that equity isn't achieved through good intentions alone – it requires careful, inclusive design processes that anticipate potential failure points.

Design decisions can have systemic impact.

Each design decision in healthcare cascades through complex systems, affecting thousands of lives. When we redesigned care team structures in the post-pandemic workshop, we saw how seemingly small interaction changes could transform both provider experience and patient outcomes.
